Klonopin and Xanax Side Effect: Headaches

When you taper off of Klonopin or Xanax, you may experience headaches. However, if you go cold turkey – in my experience and from the cases I’ve read – expect them. These things are more like migranes and can stop you from functioning. You’ll want to lie down and pull the blinds. You’ll end up taking exedrin or some other pain reliever, but don’t expect it to help much.

When confronted with this wicked symptom, you have two choices. Either to go through it and try to tough it out or take a little bit more Xanax or Klonopin to help you feel better. If you decide the former, you might want to try self-hypnosis (or known as meditation). I’ve tried this before when I’ve had headaches and it did improve the situation, but didn’t take it away totally. However, I have a little secret weapon that works like a charm for me: Hot Shower.

Now – I’m not saying this will work for everyone…in fact, it may not work for anyone. Though it does make sense. Picture it. Get into your bathroom, turn on the shower and turn off the lights (be careful not to trip over something). Now allow the hot water concentrate on the part of the head where the headache is. Now breathe deeply. This is important. The hot steam that enter your nostrils will travel up and open up the blood vessels of the brain and allows the blood to flow more freely, hence, easing the headache.

So the next time you have a headache, try either meditation or a hot shower, or even both. It works for me a majority of the time – it may just work for you.
